it's not though. transferring power to lobbyists is really undemocratic. there's nothing undemocratic about voters selecting older reps. we should remove age restrictions on running though; that's undemocratic.

There's always some guy who's effectively in charge of the thing because he's been doing the thing longer than everyone else and knows everyone else who works on the thing Noah is saying if that guy isn't the actual elected politician it'll be the lobbyist

I.e. in some Prez Rickard situation where it's actually the law that the politician has to be a teenager with no previous experience (like it apparently is on Naboo) you won't actually get a constant flow of fresh, new exciting ideas

Yeah, this is arguably one of the biggest arguments against term limits. The proper operation of government administration takes time and infrastructure set up, it's why so many House reps seem so less effective - they have to keep interrupting it with fundraising.

I do think the inevitable conservatism that sets into any long-lived institution is a bad thing in the end - because I'm not a conservative - but it's not an easy problem to solve Term limits themselves aren't a magic wand to fix it, they'd probably mostly mask the problem

Right but the argument can’t both be “term limits are bad because it empowers lobbyists” and “lobbying is good, actually”

I think term limits aren’t really an effective tool here because what we really want is for half our electorate to not be hateful nihilists and then half of the remainder to be too chickenshit to do anything about the hateful nihilists
