I mean, speaking with my sociologist hat on, advertising does "work" in that it (like all other media) is one of the tools that culture uses to reproduce itself, but it's much harder to say if it "works" to get people to actually buy things.

I could never tell if this had to do with me or if my teachers were lying, but my teachers kept insisting that even "bad" advertisements worked because they made you remember the product name when you disliked the ad, and when I dislike the ad, I don't remember the product name
