Well, the date is kind of irrelevant. Still one of the greatest successes the military has seen from a Hollywood film was Top Gun in 1986. Enlistment went up 250% after that movie. They had guys waiting outside theaters to sign up 18 year olds.

So let me make sure I've got this right -- you think advertising doesn't work and that the over $300 billion per year spent on it is just people doing dumb things.

if advertising were in any way consistenty then all good movies would do well and all bad movies would bomb, but we know that's not true, so it's not that surprising to point out that the 10% of ad guys who are really good and savvy at their jobs are not doing all the ads we see
