The version of the USAF that lets Carol fight in combat and be a badass and "reach her full potential" is the Kree military, and they are the bad guys in the movie

If someone literally wanted to follow Carol's journey as presented in the movie, they would punch their NCO, accept a court-martial, and go off to be a hero on their own without being part of anyone's goddamn army That's extremely simple and obvious and explicit in the film

I really feel like this is the kind of thing people deliberately have to reach to *not* get because of the Girl Power thing Like it's *extra important* we critique anything that looks liberal feminist *extra hard*

Like if Carol were in fact a man and this were a story of "One man who turns his back on the band of brothers he devoted his life to to follow his conscience" would we feel the need to say "Okay but there's still a ton of positive military tropes here, it's not fully anti-war!"?

Did people hot-take this hard on Soldier with Kurt Russell? "It's still called Soldier! It still makes it seem cool and badass that he's a soldier! It's not REALLY as anti-authority as it COULD be!" Come on

I don't remember the military pigbacking on that movie for a massive recruitment drive.

Well, the date is kind of irrelevant. Still one of the greatest successes the military has seen from a Hollywood film was Top Gun in 1986. Enlistment went up 250% after that movie. They had guys waiting outside theaters to sign up 18 year olds.

It was a random example of a very obvious version of this trope Pick whatever movie about a maverick soldier turning against authority suits you best -- Firefly on TV, if that's your thing
