I am fine with saying that what a movie's plot and dialogue and themes say is often very different from what a movie's moment-to-moment imagery says, and that since cinema is a visual medium the latter is often more important But that doesn't negate the former

Like I actually did in fact really like Winter Soldier and Civil War but Captain Marvel is absolutely a much more committed criticism of American imperialism than Winter Soldier, it isn't even close The critiques of Captain Marvel are WAY MORE TRUE of Winter Soldier

Winter Soldier has all the characters signing back up with the "good parts" of the US government as a positive thing! It ends with Black Widow giving a little monologue about how as bad as fascism is we'll always need cops and soldiers!

My whole point is that you don't even have to take this as being about men and women I think the point would be greatly weakened if Carol were a dude, but you could still make that movie, and it would still be more subversive than any of Steve Rogers' movies

It's that kind of contrarian attitude that lets people like Tim Burton get away with never having BAME people in his films, because he never thinks his films need them. (He literally said this in an interview)
