Okay, so that's just Truffaut's Maxim -- you can't ever really make an antiwar movie because war looks inherently cool There are people who unironically stan the Mobile Infantry in Verhoeven's Starship Troopers and wish they could join it, the satire is totally lost on them

And fine, those people are real and they matter and they vote and we have to live with the fact that that's a valid criticism of that movie or any movie about war But it's still absurd to say this proves what the movie is "really about"

Pretending like what's honestly an almost-TOO-obvious anti-authority script just doesn't exist because the real-life ties to the USAF automatically override it is also pretty disingenuous

The broad theme of "discipline and training and teamwork make you a better person" is a very old and common theme in movies with any kind of moralizing bent aimed at "family" audiences, including in most other MCU movies It was actually shocking to see it so thoroughly rejected

Like to me it's a big fucking deal that the ending of the movie is Carol betraying and turning on her whole squad, without hesitation, that it absolutely crumples up and throws away the whole battle-buddies "We're a family because of what we've been through together" shit

The kind of sentimentality that Guardians of the Galaxy traded in, e.g. "Family", "family", "family" is a constant refrain in Hollywood movies, it's SO RARE to see a movie that just straight up says "Fuck your family"

Like Black Panther is still a fairly conservative movie in this way It's a big deal when T'Challa yells at his dad's ghost and at his ancestors "ALL OF YOU WERE WRONG" It's not as big a deal as if he just casually shot his dad in the face and turned his back and walked away

Carol modding her uniform into different colors, shooting her NCO in the face, saying "That war? I'm gonna end it" It's like if Black Panther had the burning of the heart-shaped herb presented as a 100% heroic moment -- "Fuck being part of ANY team other than just me"
