My advice to people is never to join the military, even when the country doesn't have a proudly white nationalist Commander-in-Chief, even if it's for a POG MOS, even if the nation's not at war, even if it's just to be a weekend warrior It will perpetually socially unmoor you

And the idea that deliberately disenfranchising your citizens is a good thing, is such a white person point of view.

It's a bit Marxian*, but I wouldn't want to be any part of a country that would require me to risk death for it. *Groucho, rather than Karl, obviously.

99.9% of the time, Heinlein is a good guide for how NOT to organize a society. The other 0.1% of the time, you have to keep looking over your shoulder for Charles Manson.

Despite the fact that any real-life military will depend on a vast array of REMFs, who have very safe jobs with good health insurance...

One of the ways his military would fall apart immediately is that it's absolutely expected that generals would not just be on the front lines, but actively engaged in the battle at all times. And I get that idea in theory, but in practice, it's Stalinesque.

I think if I had to describe RAH's books, the word that springs to mind is "arrogant". There's generally at least one character that knows all the rules (and loopholes) and cheerfully does whatever the hell he wants.

It's an interesting idea when you unpack it. Frontline troops have to risk their lives, so how do you make the non combat roles equivalent seeing as all service offers the same reward of citizenship
