My advice to people is never to join the military, even when the country doesn't have a proudly white nationalist Commander-in-Chief, even if it's for a POG MOS, even if the nation's not at war, even if it's just to be a weekend warrior It will perpetually socially unmoor you

Like yes there are a lot of very good leftist/intersectional appeals to not in the military and I endorse them all! But I don't think any such appeal will scare someone so straight as the simple fact that a dark day WILL come, when everyone they know is a service member or vet

A day will come, when you are vulnerable, and broken, and in need of support, and *everyone* you can reach out to is a fucking hardass who takes pride in how much of a callous, pigheaded piece of shit they are. Because those are your people. Those are the clan you've joined

I think a lot about someone like Heinlein throwing out a piece of dialogue like "What do you know about civilians?" "I know we don't speak the same language" like it was something to be proud of

The thing is, even taking his fascist tract in Starship Troopers on its own terms as much as possible, focusing as much as possible on what he thinks is positive about it, it's repulsive The idea that you shouldn't get to vote if you don't have your shit together

Fuck you man, as a lazy slob and a member of the Lazy Slob Caucus I *do* intend to vote to make society more conducive to lazy slobs and people who oppose that can go eat shit The right to be a lazy slob should be in the Constitution

I'm going to defend ST this far -- though no farther. 1. People who've served in the military say it does a good job of capturing the camaraderie of a military unit. 2. I will give him credit for allowing other service than military to count toward citizenship. But still, oof.

Point 2) is a dishonest point people bring up to try to defend the book, in the text as written it's very clear that you must join *the military* in order to vote, even if it's not in a combat specialization

You can look for different quotes from the book that imply a different ratio of combat to non-combat specializations -- although if combat postings were as rare as people argue it's weirdly convenient that Rico gets assigned to infantry when he has no relevant qualifications

But it doesn't matter
@Nymphomachy didn't serve in a combat position and none of the people she's subtweeting did either
Combat and violence, in and of itself, is not what this is about
It's the "masculine virtues" (fascist virtues) of collective self-sacrifice Heinlein meant

As I said, I'm not defending the universe as it is. They're two minor points; as with a lot of fiction, I think you can enjoy parts of it while still recognizing that in reality it would be horrific. As for Heinlein himself...he wrote a whole novel about fucking his mom.
