My advice to people is never to join the military, even when the country doesn't have a proudly white nationalist Commander-in-Chief, even if it's for a POG MOS, even if the nation's not at war, even if it's just to be a weekend warrior It will perpetually socially unmoor you

It's...well, part of the problem of that universe is that the distinction between government and military is...not very clear. Which...yes, the book is about a fascist state.

I mean I don't actually care and I would be fiercely opposed to any "national service" mandate even if it were specified it absolutely COULD NOT include service in combat or in war Fuck "service" It's unconstitutional, the 13th Amendment says I don't have to serve anyone period

You can look for different quotes from the book that imply a different ratio of combat to non-combat specializations -- although if combat postings were as rare as people argue it's weirdly convenient that Rico gets assigned to infantry when he has no relevant qualifications

But it doesn't matter
@Nymphomachy didn't serve in a combat position and none of the people she's subtweeting did either Combat and violence, in and of itself, is not what this is about It's the "masculine virtues" (fascist virtues) of collective self-sacrifice Heinlein meant - Show replies

IIRC there are other ways *very briefly* alluded to in the movie. Haven't read the book, though, so I'm not sure if they're different or I'm just misremembering.

The movie is a satire of the book. The book was written by a fascist, the movie was made by a leftist who spent his early years under Nazi occupation in Holland.

Profoundly ableist, too - it's made very clear that anyone without militarily useful abilities will be sent to dangerous weapons testing.
-
Yes, what Heinlein was actually referencing was stuff the military did with conscientious objectors irl during WWII, like testing vaccines He makes it very clear he considers it the whole point you have to risk death for your country to really be part of it
