"Hermione joined the Ministry and fought successfully for reform in the treatment of house-elves" That's it Just "reform" Some kind of improvement happened, maybe they're citizens and maybe they aren't, I dunno, leave me alone

Just the House Elves too apparently. Nothing about Muggles or centaurs or goblins or werewolves...

Love that when Dumbledore realizes the shit has hit the fan he's ready with suggestions for ending really basic disenfranchisement like "lets actually talk to giants" as a *war strategy.* Like he's always known the oppression was there but now that there's war it's important.

And then we learn goblins have these really specific longstanding grievances like "give us back our artifacts" and "let us use wands" but they're treated as background for the more important question, "Can Harry suck it up and work with these guys for two seconds?"

I’ve always had a soft spot for goblins thanks to Bruce Coville and so I was already inclined to see them sympathetically. But I was livid when I read Nice Guy Bill explain goblin craftsmanship/ownership as Theyre So Unreasonable.

Bill does not seem to understand that when somebody does not consent to you keeping an object you've given them dosh for, this is not a difference of opinion. This is called "hiring" or "renting" said object.

Yeah, that's the really weird thing about that particular cultural clash is that it's treated as so unreasonable of the Goblins, even though it's something we also do. Goblins don't sell there stuff just rent it out is a super easy concept to grasp.

There's a really ugly history of Europeans just interpreting these things to their advantage to justify invasion and conquest and then treating the "misunderstanding" as Natives just being stupid

Like all these stories about the island of Manhattan being purchased for $25 or whatever What it really means is the Europeans paid a toll or bought safe passage through a territory and then pulled out their guns and said they were staying

I've seen a hypothesis that the natives they paid were nomads (or travelling merchants from Long Island) and they understood it as being paid to spend the season "somewhere else", and the Dutch got ripped off because there's a whole massive continent to camp in, my dudes.

Right, they "paid for the island" the way you pay someonr $20 to take their parking space
