I see a few people making these comments that evil folks dont have to have rules and I think there's been some conflating of the wee folk and the devil with the arrival of Christianity - the tales of outwitting the fae being turned into tales of outwitting the devil.

Point being the fae were not evil, just capricious - so the point of them having rules and wit was bound up in tales like Cucillain and the geas to never refuse hospitality and never eat dog.
