It's a really striking far-right turn in the middle of that plot. The House Elves really are being abused, and we see it constantly. Dobby is terrified constantly. Then suddenly, it just stops being anyone's problem and Hermione is a joke.

The actual point in SPEW for a decent writer would be to set Ron's bigotry against Hermione's white saviourism with Harry recognising them both as clueless in privilege, and freed Dobby in Hogwarts being the one who actually frees the other elves. But that would require nous.
