I don't get how people don't get just from reading the way the narrator in Harry Potter talks that JK Rowling is a really mean person in real life who was obviously one of the girls with a talent for cruel bullying taunts when she was in school She seriously can't help herself

Like part of the reason the Harry Potter books are "tight third-person narration" rather than actual first person is so that the narrator can be hilariously viciously cuttingly insulting about the people Harry interacts with without making Harry himself seem like an asshole

That's kind of the whole point of the Cormoran Strike books, like the "Robert Galbraith" persona and Cormoran Strike himself as a narrator are JKR putting on this mask of a tough working-class war veteran badass macho dude so she can just go ham on being a huge asshole

Both Cormoran himself and "Robert Galbraith" can just fucking roast people constantly like an insult comic at an open mic And it comes off as likable brutal honesty when it's this weathered masculine dad saying it, preserving Jo's own image as this warm cuddly maternal librarian

It seriously sends me how part of JKR's public persona is being "nice", like she's seriously one of the least nice people in the world She used to dish *constantly* about how all the hateable characters in Harry Potter were her getting back at someone in real life

That makes a lot of sense of her complete inability to let characters develop in accordance with the narrative dynamics. Like, the narrative desperately wants Petunia's backstory to make her sympathetic, as any decent writer would click and make Harry see it, but Rowling won't.

The narrative genuinely manages to make her sympathetic, but then Rowling puts them on a bus and sort of gives Dudley a half-assed redemption moment via "basic politeness".

Really, when you actually look at the context of that shit, Petunia was basically told "your sister is better than you because LITERAL MAGIC and if you tell anyone they will think you are an idiot and/or mindwipe you" and then... just let live her life. How could she NOT hate it?

The sheer lack of sympathy the books have for Muggles, even when the premise evolves into Voldemort and the Death Eaters being evil Nazis specifically because they hate Muggles She kind of tries, with stuff like the Prime Minister chapter, but it doesnt stick

Like, it's telling that the worst thing about the Death Eater regime in Deathly Hallows is *falsely accusing Muggleborn wizards of just being Muggles* "Who did you steal that wand from? Whose magic have you been leeching off of?" etc

And that obviously shouldn't be presented as the worst thing they do The worst thing is how they treat ACTUAL Muggles - and Squibs - who ACTUALLY can't do magic The fact that a Muggle is helpless to stop anything a wizard wants to do to them should be a horrifying injustice

But the books never really question this They do, in fact, end up going with this idea that the talented elite deserve their privileged position by right and the bad guys are only bad because of their conservative belief that talent is hereditary

No one brings up the idea that it *actually is fundamentally unjust* that some people win the genetic lottery and get all this inborn power other people don't Wizards get to fuck with Muggles' brains and wipe their memories at their convenience and that's fine, that's normal

Aye, c.f. my gargantuan thread on how it reads if you posit that Muggles *can* actually do magic but just don't know to ever try. It's essentially a classist eugenics fantasy with proles as genetically inferior underclass incapable of anything extraordinary.

Right. Yes, the bad wizards are eugenicist and all, but SHE'S the one who wrote a world where some people are just naturally adept at controlling nature through force of will and everyone else is not. That's an awfully eugenicist worldview.

In the Potter books, a Squib, "is a non-magical person who is born to at least one magical parent" - someone who should be able to learn magic, since it's often hereditary, but isn't.
