The link you posted was to Susan Cooper (who I'd recommend), not Diane Duane (who I'd also recommend). There's 2 versions of @dduane's older books(first is from 1983), she updated them for modern kids. The originals are in bookstores, she sells the revised versions online.

Have read many of the others mentioned & this is one of my faves (even though Rowling probably lifted less from this series). I often recommend as a wizarding alternative for people who just can’t with JK anymore. It’s far better writing too.

TBH, it's unlikely that R lifted anything much from these, even though the first four books had UK editions in the early 90s. They literally have no common ground except that the protagonists are young wizards. 😁 But thanks for the nice words about the writing! Much appreciated.

(I could also whisper plaintively, "Also, 'wizarding' is something they do in that other universe. Over here we call it 'errantry'. Can we use that instead...?" ...But I haven't had my tea yet.) 🤣

I think the real takeaway here is that the whole general concept of "young wizards being trained in magic as their coming-of-age story" was a large and healthy genre long before the first Harry Potter book came out

And one of the annoying things about JKR's footprint on culture was people giving her all this credit for creating this genre (or, what's actually kind of more insulting, "rescuing it from obscurity" or "saving it from collapse")

It's a bit similar to people who say that George Lucas *create the concept* of "science fantasy" with Star Wars, like no one else did swords and martial arts and epic prophecies and quests in a spaceships-and-lasers setting before he thought of it

Or -- again, this is actually more insulting -- saying he "redeemed" that genre, that all the people who did it before him did cheesy and corny "space opera" but Star Wars was somehow the first one that was actually good

(Even that's more defensible because from a filmmaking perspective Star Wars really objectively was a huge leap forward in terms of special effects and set design and visual presentation Harry Potter, when it started, was just... a book)
