Vanilla Law and Order had a former IA detective as a lead character (played by Anthony Anderson) for like one season and then they canceled the show https://twitter.com/Nicole_Cliffe/status/1311487751078912001 …

We need to admit that often the cops are just another street gang.

All so toothless. Not only is it sudden, but we have news he's "on the take" without it having any effects. Which of the guys he helped out away were actually innocent, but he framed them? Which mobsters did he give a warning to, so they got off? What cases did he crash?

"On the take" just ends up being a generically bad thing and not an actual pattern of bad behaviour with actual consequences. Hence why he can come back from it so easily.

It's interesting to compare SVU, where multiple "other department" cops are busted for unambiguously evil shit, and even portrayed as systemically encouraged to, but IA are STILL portrayed as assholes for monitoring SVU brutality instead of recognizing them as true heroes.

See also military scifi, such as Stargate, where civilian oversight is unfair, a waste of time, etc. They're not military, they don't really know what's important!
