As a fiction writer who did her undergrad degree in English literature, I'm here to inform you your idea of what fiction is is sadly mistaken.

Oh man, a BA in English? Nice. How much genre fiction have you read?

Do you think that there aren't classes in genre fiction? My very first class ever at uni was a survey of American sci-fi. I've read more genre novels than you've had hot dinners.

Also, I'm a horror writer. Last time I checked, that was considered "genre."

Horror operates on different rules, depending on sub genre, than fantasy, though the two sometimes overlap. But regardless: fiction doesn’t have to be researched well to be good. And this is fiction, so if you find something she got wrong about the real world: it’s fiction.

Sure I mean, one reason she's so easy and popular to criticize is that she's also not good

Like, if the books actually were a stirring work of artistic genius, the cultural appropriation would still be incredibly and pointlessly shitty but the quality of the work would make you care less However, they are not good, and the people claiming they are have bad taste

I mean, shit, if Cho Chang were a deeply and empathetically drawn character whom it was easy to fall in love with and feel like you knew like a real person and whose struggles and triumphs you felt deeply invested in, it'd be easier to overlook she has a stupid-ass name

But she doesn't Fuck's sake She put an Asian girl in the story to be Harry's decoy love interest you're rooting for him to get over and dump so he can get with Ginny or Hermione or whoever And then she gave her a ching-chong-Chinaman name Adding insult to injury

that always struck me as weird, like both Cho and Chang are legit Chinese surnames, but she couldn't find a single Chinese personal name that she liked so she ended up with something nonsensical.

She didn't put ANY thought into it AT ALL Like even the question of surname, given name, Chinese, Korean, Japanese -- none of that entered her head I am absolutely convinced literally all she did was say "Let's make the pretty girl an Oriental" and write down what came to mind
