Embarrassing. Off the top of my head: Voldemort, Gryffindor, Malfoy, pensieve, Lestrange (family motto: “toujours purs”).

Yeah, so the fuck what That doesn't make using an ACTUAL ENGLISH WORD to mean the OPPOSITE OF WHAT THAT WORD MEANS somehow not a mistake Maybe her knowing the French word is the *explanation* for the mistake, it doesn't make her somehow secretly correct

Also, "Pensieve" isn't French, it's just a pun in English ("pensive" + "sieve") The French translation of Harry Potter doesn't use it, because the word "sieve" isn't what it's called in French (it's called a "tamis") The translator renders it "Pensine"

I thought so too, until the films had Gambon pronounce it the French way.

Actually it does, for a lot of English words ending in “ation”. Say them in a French accent and that is literally the French translation.

The word "sieve" does not have a "French pronunciation" because it is not a French word

Many French words end in “ive”, pronounced with a long i. Pensive isn’t one of them and yes, sieve is Germanic in origin (modern German: Sieb). It’s called wordplay.

Okay, so Michael Gambon said a word in a movie that "sounds French" even though it is not in any sense French, and that's... part of the intrinsic French-ness of Harry Potter or something, and that means you were right about "Pensieve" being "French" and you are totally not owned

And you totally knew, all along, that "sieve" had a Germanic and not Romance origin You totally didn't fuck that up My perception that you fucked that up and said something stupid that proves you don't actually speak French is because I just haven't studied French enough

Just like every single other thing JK Rowling said that makes her sound ignorant is because she's actually a master of the French language, and everyone who thinks otherwise didn't read her biography saying she majored in French and therefore the book must be read Frenchly

"Cho Chang" only sounds like something a racist white idiot would name an Asian character because I'm thinking like an American What I don't realize is that JK Rowling is fluent in French and "Cho Chang" is what a racist white *Frenchman* would name an Asian character
