There are people in the world who actually will change their opinion on civil rights for vulnerable minorities because they think the TERF lady wrote fun wizard books and don't want to stop liking them And that's ridiculous, and awful

Even weirder considering just rereading JK Rowling's work will color your impression of her work in a similar direction

I'm almost impressed by how much dead air was in the first half of the seventh book She wrote herself into a corner leaving Hogwarts and then proceeded to repeatedly run into the wall until the third act

A thing it changes is how you interpret things that may be ambiguous or have multiple possible interpretations. Take the house elves. You can take it as an allegory on how slavery leaves long lasting damage but, that not what she meant.

In some moments (Cho Chang, goblin bankers, fat-shaming the Dursleys, etc) a fan could handwave the bigotry at accidental and believe that her heart was in the right place even if her brain wasn't. That's harder to do when she reveals herself as a real life bigot.

Right, the benefit of the doubt isn't something you can just keep on getting for free forever, and she's gotten a LOT of it

I was never into Harry Potter, but it was alway problematic. The whole "no most house elves love being slaves" thing was awful for both the obvious reasons and because it was used to shame Hermione for doing something Harry did but bigger and better.

You know that writers create stories and worlds, right...? “Most house elves like being slaves” literally tells you nothing about JKR because it is just an aspect of the world her characters live in. A world in which basically all these house elves have ever known is enslavement.
