Misremembering Madagascar as being in "West Africa" Confusing the Malagasy language with the divination practice of Sikidy Misspelling Sikidy "Sidiki" And then thinking one aspect of the sign was the sign's whole meaning

It's just... really fucking lazy and disrespectful It would not be a big deal -- it would be depressingly par for the course -- if it were just some random fantasy book But of course it's a big deal now because the books became a big deal And she never raised her standards

This is the same shitty level of research she put into bloviating about skinwalkers in Navajo culture or naga in Hindu culture Hell, it's the same shitty level of research she put into talking about boggarts and brownies and other elements of *English* culture

This is what I mean when I say she's not just a bad writer and a bigoted person but profoundly lazy Her worldview is shaped by this amazingly self-confident willingness to just glance at something once or twice and be sure she understands as much of it as she needs to

Was there ever any need to go back and look up what "Alohomora" meant? Nah Was there ever any worry that someone from the culture she was shamelessly lifting from might be offended or take issue with her? Nah Just plow on ahead, Jo, let your imagination be your compass

Lol no it doesn't There's no way JKR picked the name for this reason, there's no way she did any research at all, if she did someone would have told her it's not a fucking name

Would you give me props if I didn't speak English but I decided to write a white American character named Anxiety

This screams of "what I want to think is the case rather than what it actually is!" You criticized in your lengthy ass thread but who's to say that JKR used your logic for naming certain characters or spells? You never have asked her about how she thought of those names.

No, JK Rowling is the one who said that the word Alohomora comes from the "West African dialect of Sidiki" Whatever her reason for saying that, it cannot actually be true, because there is no such thing as the "West African dialect of Sidiki"

even saying "West African dialect" at all is pretty wrong As if West Africa was enough of a singular linguistic entity that differences are all basically "dialects," instead of having hundreds of languages from diverse families

It's the very English sort of racism where we can recognise that there are literally multiple dialects of English in the UK (even just as simple as sheep counting - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yan_Tan_Tethera … ) but assume that somehow half a continent all speak the same sort of "foreign".

I'm not aware if she said that but ok... Nevertheless, in your thread and the comments you've answered, you just pushed what you think MIGHT be the case, since you don't exactly know her reason to select those names. 1/2
