Because I'm petty, I'm going to gather you all around and tell you about that time JK Rowling was extremely wrong about something and, by being wrong about it, poisoned Google search results for it for years afterwards and generally made the world ignorant about it

1/The problem JK Rowling has is she's a woman in a man's world (fantasy fiction). This whole thread is laughable. Popular culture is full of people lightly referencing and changing ancient & other other cultures (hello Star Wars? ROTLA? etc etc). What she did though was this..

2/She completely blew up that entire genre of fiction. Her books were spellbinding for her audience, and never has an author has so much pressure & negativity on them whilst writing a series. Has she lost it? Does she have writers block? Is she weak and inferior? ...

3/The patriarchy have always hated her (see how many of the comments on this thread are men). I'm only 25% English and don't give a toss that parts of my culture are used as an influence on the stories ...

4/As for her 'million pound advances'. Her first book she basically got nothing. An advance is a forward payment on royalties. She came out about £750million in profit and owed nothing ...

5/It's like the Cho Chang thing. Chang is a hugely popular surname and god forbid anyone who dares come up with a fictitious name that that fits with that. I mean it's not as if she ever did that with loads of the English people in the series, Jesus.

6/Go and do something positive with your life instead of dragging a successful woman who has made huge, positive change to tens of millions of peoples' lives.

This ridiculous defensive rant is actually helping radicalize me against the whole idea of liberation-through-representation Like the simple fact that JK Rowling is a woman, and JK Rowling is successful, means JK Rowling's success is all women's success

The fact you are against liberation through representation is the least surprising thing I've heard in all of this.

Come on, Arthur everyone knows that Phyllis Schlafly's success as a political figure liberated women everywhere. And putting Amy Coney Barrett on the Supreme Court is a great moment for all feminists.
