Because I'm petty, I'm going to gather you all around and tell you about that time JK Rowling was extremely wrong about something and, by being wrong about it, poisoned Google search results for it for years afterwards and generally made the world ignorant about it

A lot of people are dragging you for "obsessing over" this but it's, what, half an hour's research? Research that authors are supposed to have done when they write about things they don't know anything about.

I know it's not like I spent a year traveling to different libraries across the globe interviewing people to make this thread It's just a matter of doing a little digging and fact checking online

For the record I don't know if this New Age website is literally the same one JK Rowling got the word "Alohomora" from The book was written almost 30 years ago so she probably wasn't online But she obviously got it from a source *like* this website https://www.serenapowers.com/sikidy.html

I.e. it's this set of stock descriptions of the Sikidy signs that's been passed around all over the place like the description of the Chinese zodiac you get on your place mat at a restaurant It can't have been terribly difficult to find originally

And the issue here clearly isn't that she went digging and digging and found a very obscure piece of knowledge and misinterpreted it It's that she glanced at something in passing once, had it stick in her mind as a "cool word", and then never looked it up again

Which isn't the worst thing in the world, I guess, but it's obnoxious, and it ties into bigger issues This is someone who's not careful, who's intellectually lazy and doesn't think about where she gets her ideas

Like this is why JK Rowling might be telling the truth about not being consciously influenced by R Worst Witch She may have seen the movie on TV at some point, forgot she saw it, and then genuinely thought she came up with the concept of wizard boarding school whole cloth

(This is why many other fantasy writers dislike her and have disliked her for years She's like Cartman walking around patting himself on the back for the "fish dicks" joke)
