It's a few things. The thing where he said that Joel admitting to having been on both sides of an ambush was the big insight that Joel was kind of a bastard was a big one

The part where he didn't disagree with Nolan North on "David and Joel are two sides of the same coin" is another BIG one

He phrased it REALLY badly, but I think what he might have been trying to get across is that David and his group of cannibals is kind of the ultimate result of Joel’s “survive by any means necessary” ideology. Idk though. He might have meant something else.

And he's not wrong... but he tries to be too clever about it. Like he's said (to paraphrase) "David isn't evil, he's just doing what he feels he needs to do to survive." No Troy, David is a paedophile rapist as well as a murderer cannibal, I think we can safely say he is evil.

Yeah, I was very thrown off when he said David isn’t evil. Idk if he forgot about the pedophile rapist thing, but that definitely makes David definitively evil. I can see a parallel with Joel up to that point, but that aspect takes David a big step further in badness.

Whether he's actually a rapist remains ambiguous in the game up to the point where he dies, to be fair And regardless his obsession with Ellie IS a dark mirror of Joel, that's kind of the point, when he's initially presented as a possible good guy that's the parallel

Idk, his intentions seemed very clear to me right before Ellie killed him. And with him trying to hold Ellie’s hand earlier, that’s the impression I got. And yes, he’s definitely meant to be a parallel of Joel in a lot of aspects, but I don’t think Joel would those things.

I don't think Joel would ever fully become something like David but David is what Joel's desires would be if they went completely off the rails, if he processed all those same impulses as ONLY what made him feel good and not what impact they had on the world

It's like an extension of what happened when David's crew embraced cannibalism - when he stopped thinking of other people as people and started thinking only of their instrumental value, like livestock

Ellie is just another kind of animal - David's men refer to her as his "new pet"

Talking about actor/character identification btw Ashley Johnson said she played this scene with it being obvious to Ellie that David is a rapist as soon as the thing with her hand happens Nolan North said he still thinks it's ambiguous

David is a dark mirror of Joel, absolutely. I think Baker sees the similarity but reasons it backwards. That David is fundamentally not different to Joel, who he portrays and has empathy for, so therefore David being evil is only a matter of perspective. But it so clearly isn't.
