I would honestly have felt so patronized and condescended to if Gaiman had characterized the Moon as being like "I LOVE trans women actually! come into my embrace, sister!!", like I would slam the book shut and be so pissed

I get that everyone hates us in the real world. What I don't get is why you're so invested in the idea that everything in fiction (an umbrella under which my atheist self puts religion and spirituality) must also hate us. Why is a happy ending for a trans person so offensive?

because it's twee and dishonest, to the degree of being disrespectful? It's a way of expressing that the only parts of being a trans woman that are important to storytelling are the parts of it that didn't form my personality, it's a form of escapism that has zero meaning to me

In my escapism I am not particularly engrossed in imagining a world without transmisogyny, or imagining OUR world without transmisogyny, because such a world would have no place for me in it, a woman who was raised and adapted to survive in conditions of unceasing hatred

Particularly something like Gaiman's story, are you kidding me? The idea that we're just going to take it for granted that all the actual, real-world oppression of trans women exists but the entities who made things this way all dispprove? I'd throw the book across the room

I don't necessarily accord totally with Ellie's embrace of grimdark but "let's just do a story without any transmisogyny in it" is basically saying "let's design a story about trans women that is completely unrecognizable and unrelatable to actual adult trans women"

A trans female narrative expertly and efficiently optimized to prevent Penelope from seeing even a sliver of herself anywhere in it

It's like the whole discussion about Star Trek and how, if there's a science fiction future where anyone who wants to can customize their body any way they want and there's no controversy over doing so, the concept of being "trans" might not meaningfully exist
