Like I can see that but tbh that's just how reality works in sandman rather than being an actual criticism

Really? I thought it was Gaiman responding to Ruth B@rrett types he'd encountered in the witch community

Gaiman has said multiple times since then that he is absolutely on Wanda's side in the story and Thessaly and the Moon are both bad guys (which honestly seems to me to be obvious when you read it)

Yeah, Thessaly is clearly written to be one of the least sympathetic, most infuriatingly smug characters in the Sandman universe. Nothing about her is ever portrayed as sympathetic.

She is *profoundly* unlikeable.

I hate this fucking story and I don't buy this argument. Yeah, she's unlikable. As far as the fundamental rules of the universe go she's also RIGHT. It's not presented as "just her opinion" that Wanda's assignment matters more than her identity.

I think "fundamental rules of the universe" is overstating it, the moon refuses Wanda proactively

Plus, Gaimans universe is, in a sense, almost misotheistic-ish in how deities are depicted, or Humean in the "what is isn't what ought to be" sense. It's more like Greek myth, where the universe/divinity might be a certain way but it's def. not a given that the way is right.

And on top of that, it's also outright made explicit enough mortal will can rewrite reality. The gods are just byproducts of belief, they can be rewritten or outright destroyed if their believers shunned them.

The malleability of reality is kind of an important theme in Sandman.

Right, if all the cats dream the same dream at the same time then they'll be the dominant species again

(I desperately want to see that short story made into an animated short film)
