there's definitely a sort of queer thanatos-narrative in the hypothetical framing of Laurel's bite, if not for Duke The idea of struggling, suffering to be yourself and then, when you get there at last, feeling you're at the top of the mountain and now you just want to die wellhttps://twitter.com/arthur_affect/status/1310329983294820352 …

The implication of an aborted narrative from a different genre Laurel, who's been in pain for most of her childhood, who's had to scrape herself away from the brink repeatedly before she could vote And the moment the storms begin to clear and life shows promise, she's killed

That one night where she's desired, where somebody's truly kind to her, sees her as she is without caring who she was, she's treated like a princess by someone from who the affection actually feels worth something Then that's it, the final crescendo, and she goes in the dumpster

I mean, Duke straight up says it Going on the dumpster is a test Only the ones who can pull themselves out of it are worthy

The kind of numb acceptance with which Laurel just shrugs it off when she discovers that people she really liked didn't value her life whatsoever, were literally going to kill her and forget about it by October she can't even really work up the energy to be offended or hurt

It's part of the theme The choice is always to either be a monster or just die When they offered her the "cure" it was another lie and another test If you take the cure they kill you The only cure for being a monster is to sit back and accept you deserve to be killed

Just like, conversely, the only cure for living in a world that's always trying to kill you is to go ahead and become a monster (A choice she only fully makes at the end of the movie)
