Having had Malaria, this is a platform I can get behind.

Now you have. It sucks as much as you can possibly imagine. We had good inoculation protocols when I was in Africa but some of us still managed to get it. The worst part is the constant yoyo-ing between chills and fever. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Yeah. Took a bit. Apparently it can affect the blood supply to your retina leading to temporary vision loss. Mine was never too bad but shit got fuzzy for a while and the docs had no idea if it would progress or stall out.

I can't imagine going through it with no medical support.

The thing that complicates it for a lot of folks in that part of the world is the high incidence rate of HIV infection (especially in children). Those are two things you definitely don't want to have at the same time.

It's worth pointing out that quinine tastes AWFUL ("tonic water" they sell today is like diluted 100x from actual effective tonic water) and its possible side effects are also horrific (blindness, deafness, heart attack) But it was still considered better than malaria

They invented gin and tonic as a way to try to make it easier to choke the stuff down (taking concentrated quinine pills tends to make you immediately throw up) Like, the *gin* is there to disguise the flavor of the *tonic*

The mechanism of action of quinine-type antimalarials is pretty scary, even the ones derived from it to be less damaging to the body, lie hydroxychloroquine Which is why it was messed up people were recommending it as a cureall for COVID-19

I had one of my followers one time talk about having a "bad reaction" to HCQ they made him take prophylactically while he was deployed in a high-risk area as a Marine Had recurring nightmares about murdering his family

Yup. I don’t doubt it at all. If I hadn’t been basically immobilized due to fatigue I probably would have harmed myself or someone else.
