The newer versions people are making seem to be using custom microcontrollers, like this one I just found “Phantom of the Floppera”. https://youtu.be/dmoDLyiQYKw There are a few people making songs with dot matrix printer pins, and the Floppotron is the most elaborate one I’ve seen.
