Yeah every single new cool robot thing is something they're selling as useful for "search and rescue", that's the one use case they try to keep all the attention on And while search and rescue is important, there's a lot of other different words that can come after "search and"https://twitter.com/julesprom/status/1309744673691447296 …

boston dynamics robots are cute and they could be used to automate a lot of manual labor to reduce suffering or could be used to carry supplies to communities in deserts or mountains but of course they will instead be used to control and kill people

I mean, literally before "drone strikes" were part of our national lexicon all the speculative stuff about drones emphasized how useful they would be for "search and rescue" They even actively argued they were obviously more useful for that than any other purpose

"You *could* build a drone big enough to put a missile launcher on it or something But why would you? It'd be so unwieldy and slow, any decent AA battery or even just a trained marksman could shoot it out of the sky You'd only be able to blow up defenseless, unaware targets"

Although tbh even if we phased out armed drones entirely, the whole "search and rescue" was still pretty oblivious "This little thing can fly through the sky for hours until it finds you, no matter where you are And then once it does, it can call people to come get you!"

That's very reassuring for white people whose greatest fear in life is getting lost! Imagine the authorities not being able to find you or know where you are! How unsafe that would be!

"Remember that awful story about how Aron Ralston had to cut his own arm off or die of thirst, because of his decision to go on a dangerous solo climb without letting people know where he was? Well if there were drones crisscrossing the skies we could stop worrying about that!"

I remember people actually making this specific argument when his story first went viral in 2004, as a pro-drone-tech talking point God what a stupid fucking time the Bush years were
