People are people. When crisis happens, in the absence of a strong community supporting them and providing Answers and a sense of agency, people radicalize and go for someone who DOES seem to be offering an empowering narrative.

And religious authorities, especially in America, are exactly the sort of community leader likely to offer solace and a Path. And from the depictions of her, the Prophet seems to have possibly been Latina, and that's a fairly religious demographic?

Tbh I feel like what they were going for is that because it's Seattle and not Mobile Alabama it makes it easier for us to believe it's a weird hippie homebrew religion and not just Christianity
