...that... is a hell of a resume to get cast as someone who's on screen for 10 minutes and gets I believe zero lines

Well yeah she was probably somewhat expensive But Emily is basically the "signature character" of the Seraphites if you actually want an avatar who represents the Seraphites themselves and not rebelling against them

Which I guess some would be into even if it's kind of just going "Yay transphobia"

I mean they tried *really hard* in story to be like "the Seraphites have this huge positive side in their mutual aid network roots," which of course to me just reinforces exactly what I think mutual aid networks really are and would become in a societal collapse

I would've loved it if they'd actually fully made the Seraphites seem like the good guys and had them live in a utopian village and everything about them is admirable and sympathetic until the moment a kid turns out to be trans

I love how in-universe they have Yara do the whole "the theology was corrupted" thing "The Prophet didn't say anything about torturing trans kids" Okay, but, it's kind of important that she also didn't say anything about NOT torturing trans kids

Yeah that whole "the seraphites have gone astray!" thing is just really weak in-narrative, because we KNOW their theology is objectively wrong.

I think it's a Serenity/Firefly "I don't care what you believe, just believe" thing for Lev and Yara

Oh sure, it's just that as the audience we know that the entire Seraphite code is full of shit, fundamentally. They don't believe *in* anything, really, aside from vague luddism - there's really no evidence that the setup currently ongoing isn't "working as intended."

It's funny that when they make the whole "You have to believe something to go on living" point they directly compare Lev's memory of the Prophet's teachings to Abby's of her dad They both had a legacy of just basically wanting people to be decent to each other

Except for the one specific thing that turns out to be a sticking point
