They only had marquesses to match other countries' aristocracy and make it clear who had an equivalent rank to whom, as aristocratic titles became detached from their original purpose

Well, I said it wrong, they fully officially became one nation-state in 1707 but for all practical purposes they were united with the ascension of James I of England/VI of Scots in 1603 They still had legacy titles for a while like the Lord of the Scottish Marches
