It's a whole thing about UK culture that after the UK became the UK with the 1707 Acts of Union, they were one united island and no longer had any foreign land borders, so the concept of a "march" was obsolete and the rank of "marquess" was a foreign thing

They only had marquesses to match other countries' aristocracy and make it clear who had an equivalent rank to whom, as aristocratic titles became detached from their original purpose
