watching ENOLA HOLMES with @cearo_thyme got me thinking I have no fuckin clue what the difference between a Marquis and a Marquess is, or in what if any contexts other than RHCP songs the word is pronounced "mahr-KEE"

For the peanut gallery, the word "march" is a subdivision of a country that's on a foreign border, a "county" is a subdivision that is not A marquess/marquis, who rules a march, outranks a count, who owns a county, because they're responsible for defending that border

It's a whole thing about UK culture that after the UK became the UK with the 1707 Acts of Union, they were one united island and no longer had any foreign land borders, so the concept of a "march" was obsolete and the rank of "marquess" was a foreign thing
