When they start using "atheist" as a synonym for "non-Christian" you know they're planning some bad shithttps://twitter.com/VoteMarsha/status/1309482749925961728 …

It also helps that the moment you move the conversation from "non-Christian" to "atheist" the left and liberals alike immediately drift from "That's horrible!" to "Well, atheists are pretty bad."

Is that true? I don't get the sense that atheism and atheists are poorly received in left-wing circles (with a possible exception for Washington itself, with bland politicians' profession religion). There's a lot of frustration with a small set of dirtbag atheists.

Atheism is much more widely accepted in the "elite bubble" than in "the Left" broadly speaking -- as many people in said Twitter bubble now daily remind us, the two aren't the same thing at all

And even then, based on my experience people in that bubble still publicly identify themselves based on some flavor of religious tradition ("I'm Episcopal, born and raised") whether or not they attend services and regardless of what they believe "Atheist" is a radioactive label

Like, yeah of course the New Atheists made themselves into huge assholes and created an inevitable backlash That doesn't mean the thing they were pissed off about was never valid, or isn't still valid

And hell the backlash to the backlash is now starting to get to obnoxious levels too I can't even make an obvious joking tweet about how "Our suffering proves there is no God" without getting chided about how that's hateful to religious minorities

Like, I was obviously joking, but also some version of that literally is what I believe -- that is, in fact, my own "religious belief" -- and I wasn't the one telling other people what to believe, you are the one telling me what to believe Maybe stop doing that

"You know that actively identifying as an 'atheist' in this way is a Christian framing of religious belief and everything you believe is still Christian-tinged" Okay! Fine! I agree! I've often said that myself! That's still my religious beliefs that I have a right to!

Some of you all give less shit to *actual* "left-leaning" Christians, including "leftist" evangelicals or tradcaths, than to those "stereotypical bitter angry atheists" Yeah sorry my life experience is such a meme you guys, I'll try to do better, maybe convert to Buddhism
