how have I missed this part of your mom's remarkably colorful character all this time

I've never done a thread about it The reason I fully shut her out of my life was because I met her lifelong best friend for coffee and she started sharing all this dirt on my mom's sex life and it turned out a lot of her friendships I witnessed were more than friendly

But honestly that's kind of the thing, she was always really open about how she used to be friends with a lot of gay men, got invited to a gay commitment ceremony in the early nineties and decided not to attend because she was pregnant and one of the men had HIV at the time

She was really big into like a gay fitness culture in those days I guess And I found out later liked to attend drag shows and stuff, tried to experiment with her best friend, definitely did sleep with this hot lesbian she introduced me to when I was like eight years old

It was just generally pretty aggravating to find out she treated me like I was this selfish narcissist for forcing my unrepentant queerness onto the family whilst she had been living a lie this whole fucking time and forcing these pigheaded republican men into her kids' lives

oh for fuck's sake like, at least the reason my mom was closeted was because of the overpowering anti-queerness she'd been raised under and made a point of not passing on to us

it's funny because she always told us it was totally okay to come out as gay if we wanted, she wouldn't treat us any differently, she was extremely expressive about how not homophobic she was which, you know, maybe not but she kept marrying white Catholic Republicans so

Anyway, I've always tried to give credit where it's due, and emphasize that my mom isn't transphobic in the M/msn/t kind of way She's just a born-and-bred salewoman who is so fixated on the idea of the inherent "marketability" of people she was horrified I would lower my station

This is a woman who sends me unsolicited cans of mace and screamer keychains as birthday gifts, because she remembers the eighties and probably thinks, a lot more frequently than I actually do, about the high murder rate for trans women, and thinks I'm at risk for that

Her concern trolling about my transition was always more along the lines of "no, you mustn't! what if you're not physically attractive? What if you'll never become rich?"
