Ha ha yes someone put into words this feeling I've had for a long time that all the pop melodies these days sound "uncertain" The supertonic is the "uncertain note", the one The Weeknd just keeps singing because his character doesn't knew what he wantshttps://youtu.be/tR32h5jhPtU

Yeah so the "Millennial whoop" is a particular sound that to me is a specific emotional cliché, an exultant cry of freedom, while "The Weeknd's One Note" is the sound of constant wavering and hesitancy that never resolves

I know being really reductive about what musical theory stuff "means" emotionally is bad (major chords aren't always happy! Minor ones aren't always sad!) but I do feel like this is pop music polarizing to extremes

Like as I understand it the warbling between the dominant and mediant (5-3-5-3-5) is a very unsubtle, in your face form of "high energy" and tension Going (2-2-2-2) is constant wavering uncertainty, which then resolves downward (2-1) or upward (2-3), a period vs question mark

It reminds me of how, say, YouTubers go to extremes in terms of the emotional tenor of their videos (5-3-5-3-5) is the zany in your face video with crude animations flying all over the screen constantly, (2-2-2-2-1, 2-2-2-2-3) is the serious face rambling unbroken to the camera
