I know being really reductive about what musical theory stuff "means" emotionally is bad (major chords aren't always happy! Minor ones aren't always sad!) but I do feel like this is pop music polarizing to extremes

Like as I understand it the warbling between the dominant and mediant (5-3-5-3-5) is a very unsubtle, in your face form of "high energy" and tension Going (2-2-2-2) is constant wavering uncertainty, which then resolves downward (2-1) or upward (2-3), a period vs question mark

Oh yeah, I agree. I was just pointing out another convention of modern pop music. I find it interesting when people identify these little characterizing trends in music and think about how they relate to our culture, think about what it says.
