Arthur Chu added,
Even back in the good old Harry Potter days it was certainly kind of noticeable and weird that a mother's willingness to lay down her life for her son got hammered in over and over and over again as the Most Powerful Magic in the Universe Of course she'd end up being pro-life
And of the living mothers only evil ones like Mrs. Dursley and Bellatrix Lestrange had one kid. The good kind of mom was Mrs. Weasley, who chose quantity of kids over quality of life.
Even as a kid I noticed and thought it weird that none of the moms had jobs.
Once you've had it pointed out to you that JKR's most blatant self-insert isn't actually Hermione but is Lily Potter -- the red hair is the giveaway -- a LOT of really unpleasant shit falls into place
There is so much self-loathing in the way she writes women, and the way she punishes Umbridge is so pointed. Lilly doesn't try to fight or plead for her own life, she just does the noble thing and dies.
Yes, look, I'm not saying a mother making the Ultimate Sacrifice for her kids is a bad thing or an uncommon trope, but... There is SO MUCH pressure in the Harry Potter universe to be a Good Mom, almost *every* female character ends up going through that arc
