His lectures on physics are highly recommended. Simple to understand. Straightforward. https://www.feynmanlectures.caltech.edu/I_toc.html

Feynman's reputation for this is notable because it is rare There are many people just as smart as Feynman when it comes to science who are not as good at writing in a casual breezy tone as he was, and therefore are not as famous

This I agree with. It takes special skill to write like that, which is why they are famous. But the number of times I've been told to "go read Butler you bigot!" is way too high, indicating that the best minds of this field are bad at communicating with the masses. Bit ironic

So don't read her, that's fine Just don't fucking pop off about her being an idiot because you don't get it

It says a lot about a field if the most recommended authors are bad at communicating.

That's a ridiculously bad interpretation. Not writing for a lay audience != "bad at communicating."

If your field has better authors, why am I always told to go read Butler?

Probably because those people overestimated your intelligence if you can't tell that you're missing some background in critical theory needed to understand her ideas. For fuck's sake, this is not difficult to understand.

Why is it only gender studies people insult intelligence of others? You'll never find a scientist tell a social science person they're too stupid to understand xyz. Very interesting

people just expect philosophy to be easy bc "iT's JuSt rEaDinG"... but like it isn't easy all the time and you have to work to understand it. it's a dream when a philosopher doesnt write like Hegel. youre almost always going to need 2ndary sources to interpret works as a beginner

I had a physics teacher in HS who was best known among students for saying "the so-called 'social sciences'" and "if it's not physics, it's not real!" almost every lesson. But no it's only gender studies majors who deride other fields

A lot of the skepticism about the validity of women's studies and gender studies comes from a place of not having the field's basic ideas explained in a clear manner for lay people. If I can't understand something, I can't validate it.

yup... or assuming the author being referenced is obvious. (more than one Butler, cause Octavia was a clear communicator 😀)
