Replying to @CassidyGavin @graceelavery
His lectures on physics are highly recommended. Simple to understand. Straightforward. https://www.feynmanlectures.caltech.edu/I_toc.html

Feynman's reputation for this is notable because it is rare There are many people just as smart as Feynman when it comes to science who are not as good at writing in a casual breezy tone as he was, and therefore are not as famous

This I agree with. It takes special skill to write like that, which is why they are famous. But the number of times I've been told to "go read Butler you bigot!" is way too high, indicating that the best minds of this field are bad at communicating with the masses. Bit ironic

So don't read her, that's fine Just don't fucking pop off about her being an idiot because you don't get it

Also 1) There's nothing "ironic" about it, working in your field and popularizing the field are SEPARATE SKILLS and the very best at one are usually NOT all that good at the other

Feynman was a great teacher and a great scientist, but he wasn't the greatest scientist who ever lived, and many of the contenders for that title had notoriously shitty people skills and were notoriously dismissive about talking to the general public

2) Gender Trouble isn't Butler trying to speak to a lay audience in the first place The paragraph you like to mock so much is about critiquing an existing model of oppression used by other academic feminists and arguing why that model is flawed and breaking down

Butler is clearly NOT incapable of speaking to a lay audience when she chooses to, which is why multiple times in the past few years she's done a popular takedown (of TERFs, of Bari Weiss, etc) that's been widely read and gone viral
