Butler is clearly NOT incapable of speaking to a lay audience when she chooses to, which is why multiple times in the past few years she's done a popular takedown (of TERFs, of Bari Weiss, etc) that's been widely read and gone viral

IIRC his fame was very much earned as a science *educator* and not as an actual researcher. A valuable job, to be clear, because without educators there would be no researchers, but it's a totally different skill from research.
