I'm trying to think what the most obscure Greek/Latin reference in Harry Potter even is -- I guess the fact that one of the Death Eaters is named Alecto?

But I mean people being impressed there's a giant three-headed dog that acts as a guardian -- that's literally in Disney's Hercules

Another reason Rick Riordan is the superior author to Terfs McGee

Had a fun time the other day actually as old ladies at work were talking about books and praising JK for "writing all that while a homeless single mother, recovering from her X" while I'm desperately trying to steer the conversation towards Good Authors

Yeah they were like "oh she had a bed at her sisters but couldn't stay during the day, she was wandering around practically homeless" and since I'm a work I can't just scream "She's a shitty terf and second rate at her best, talk about better writers!"

It's a very misleading definition of "homeless" (does not own a lease or title to her own home), just as honestly it's a misleading definition of "unemployed" (choosing not to pursue employment for the time being and to work on her novel instead)

eh, i think being strict about homelessness is kinda harmful. if you're couch surfing, sleeping out of your car, etc, you're still in a profoundly unstable life situation that can make everything else very hard for you.

Fair enough, but a couch surfer or someone sleeping in their car does qualify for the literal definition of "homeless" (no permanent address) and I would argue staying with your sister is not the same thing

At least, staying with family (with no immediate prospect of getting kicked out) is as different from couch surfing as couch surfing is from actually sleeping rough or in a shelter

i'm not an expert on saint joanne's personal history, so i won't comment other than to say that having a bed at your sister's is not necessarily the same as a permanent, reliable place to live

"carefully scrutinizing someone's exact life history to determine if they were *really* homeless" is the sort of thing i try to avoid, even if they're raging bigots
