I think a lot about bias. Bias a drink before we make love
I had never seen this specific illustration, but I immediately recognized the anecdote from World War II and I knew what the OP meant.
Like this it sounds helpful: “It's a very well known illustration of the concept of survivorship bias and if the Big Data person is not interested enough in the topic to have encountered it before then it's unlikely they think enough about bias to be trusted to interpret data.”
Gatekeeping is fun!
It is not gatekeeping to expect a big data employee to have seen something they teach in 101 classes. It is their job to be able to interpret what the picture means.
This is a good response to someone who claims to deal with data, but a shitty response to someone who doesn't
You misread the post. 1. Answered what the picture is. 2. Answered why it is relevant.
Wow so even though I'm well aware of survivorship bias and understand it just fine, the fact that I've never seen this before means I'm unfit to interpret data? Damn.
Basically yeah because this is data knowledge 101. It’s like saying you’re a psychologist or sociologist studying/consulting about leadership and power positions and saying “Milgram? Never heard of him”.
