The surrogate in this situation is Cohen's sister in law, I think it's safe to say she'll be a part of the child's life if she wants to be, so maybe you should complain about this issue to someone else

Also, in a majority of cases, surrogates are employed by cishet couples In many of these cases the wife is able to produce ova but unable to conceive, and is therefore the egg donor for the pregnancy So the child does not have, by your definition, a single "real mother"

I feel like the reactionaries on this issue focus on gay men not just because they're homophobes (though that's the main reason) but because this blows up their whole philosophical objection

Like if I took the child away from the woman they're genetically related to and gave them to the one whose uterus they gestated in I'm equally "taking them away from their mother", aren't I What a conundrum

You seem to be using this hypothetical situation as a ‘gotcha’ but this could never happen in the first place if surrogacy was outlawed, which I believe the people you are arguing with are in favour of.

Yes, banning something altogether so you never have to think about the definitions of words is a common TERF strategy for dealing with the complexities of the world, what of it

"Surrogacy is unjust because if you strip away all the newfangled terminology the surrogate is the child's REAL MOTHER and you're taking HER CHILD away" "Well what about when the surrogate has no genetic relationship to the child" "Well that's WORSE and should be banned MORE"

I guess that's just a fundamental personality difference I have with conservatives, I dunno Some people think stuff like IVF is cool precisely because it destabilizes old structures Others think that's what makes it horrible and something to ban and never speak of

If "biological mother" is supposed to have the old school radfem definition of "the person who made the child from her DNA and grew it in her womb" then the child doesn't have one Or they have two Or the "mother" is a "father" - cis women can finally get someone pregnant!

Isn't that cool? Isn't that exciting? Doesn't it gas you up for newer and better ideas down the line? Like Shulamith Firestone, looking forward to the day we have artificial wombs and "biological mothers" are a thing of the past?

Or does it make you all queasy and demand it be banned so you don't have to think about it, like Leon Kass and other Republican Christians who bang on about bioethics
