I have heard this before and I'm pretty sure it isn't true Windows' internal version numbers have nothing to do with what it says on the box, like Windows 8 when it came out had the internal version number 6.2.9200

In fact one of the things they did with Windows 10 was bump up the internal version number to match the number on the box for consistency's sake, the transition from Windows 8 to 10 jumped the internal version number from 6.3.9600 to 10.0.10240
