I still think model years like they have for cars - and like Microsoft themselves tried to make happen with Windows 95 and 2000 - are the best solutionhttps://twitter.com/AndrewAlerts/status/1308499442228633601 …

Microsoft got themselves in a weird spot with the Xbox naming situation Xbox Xbox 360 Xbox One Xbox One X Then what do you do? You can't go Xbox 2/Two because Sony has PlayStation 5 and 2 is less than 5. That matters a lot when non-gamer parents are buying consoles for kids.

The reason they skipped Windows 9 (from Win 7 to Win 8 to Win 10) is because there's still a lot of legacy software that looks at Windows versions and would treat Windows 9 the same as Windows 95 and 98, because it matched the 9x pattern.

I have heard this before and I'm pretty sure it isn't true Windows' internal version numbers have nothing to do with what it says on the box, like Windows 8 when it came out had the internal version number 6.2.9200

What I just find baffling is that the names they've gone with were decided upon deliberately. There were meetings to come to the conclusion that Xbox Series X is a great and distinct name that will really make it stand out! Marketing "experts"!

Someone actually came to the conclusion at some point that making their console name sound like part of a series that goes in order is bad marketing Instead every new XBox needs to sound like a completely new, revolutionary product launch

It reminds people of how old their gaming system is, which is probably a big deal. I don't care if my OS came out seven years ago, but a seven year old console might as well be steam powered.

Since you don’t put out a new console every year they probably don’t want to call attention to how old their hardware is once it gets 5+ years since the last upgrade.
