The ancient Greeks were ALL ABOUT the idea that eros and sex could be separated from each other! This is why there's so much debate over whether or not they had a concept of being "gay" in the modern sense! They were very willing to describe people as "lovers" without fucking!

But in any case - In real life obviously these definitions weren't so clear cut, and people openly stole the word "philia" to use in place of "eros" as a euphemism ("pederasts" renamed themselves "pedophiles" to make the way they "love children" sound less bad)

You could even argue that depending on your view of sex, sex could as easily go with philia as eros The Greek god Eros (Cupid for Romans) was the one who shot you with arrows that made you go crazy with obsession, "love at first sight" But there was also the goddess Philotes

Interestingly, Dante thought of lust/eros as the least of the deadly sins because it was a result of too much feeling towards ones fellow person, as opposed to sins like pride or envy. Just goes to show how things change or how differences of opinion affect things.

Actually Lewis expressed a similar opinion when asked about homosexuality. It's been long enough since I read it that I don't know which book it's in, but it came from a radio talk or interview he did during WWII, IIRC.
