Look I know academics saying embarrassing things about "eros" or "erotics" in public is easy to dunk on and there's a time honored tradition of doing so But you all know that it makes you look ignorant, right, and not just of PoMo 20th century "queer theory" shit

The Christians took "agape" and made it the core of their philosophy, the word for universal, unconditional love, like the love God has for all creation Which is fine, but by the same token "eros" doesn't necessarily mean "sex" but just "desire"
-
So like sure "eros" has this connotation of not being selfless, altruistic love, it means desire, obsession, attraction That still doesn't necessarily mean sex - Gollum's lust for the One Ring is a classic depiction of destructive eros

Ah interesting! And makes sense in terms of how the distinction was made (love between husband & wife versus love for people who aren't your partner) Thanks!

What about philadelphia, brotherly love?
-
Right, CS Lewis popularized divvying up the concept of "love" among the four Greek words "eros", "philia", "agape" and "storge", although the actual ancient Greeks probably didn't view it nearly so rigidly
