You can not tell me, when most politicians are lawyers, when those politicians select their oversight among other lawyers, when both JDs and legal counsel are deliberately designed to be inaccessible to all but the very privileged, that the profession of law is not inherently bad

Well, the justification for having lawyers is to defend yourself against other people's lawyers, and if the system didn't exist and we had to defend ourselves from each other personally it'd be even more unequal It's like soldiers

I have more respect for soldiers than I do for lawyers

I mean on the scale of expectations of human decency I'd go GOOD[...][...][...] enlisted POGs => public defenders => enlisted grunts => lawyers => commissioned officers => judges => federal judges => elected politicians with JDs => SCOTUS judges => cops => PURE EVIL

I guess lawyers who work for the government, especially prosecutors, are the cops/soldiers here, regular lawyers in private practice are more like mercenaries

Anyway there's a lot of holes in this taxonomy, like there's all kinds of "regular lawyers" whose careers are more or less problematic than prosecutors, including the question of big-money criminal defense attorneys who protect the constitutional rights of millionaires

There's also, of course, the fact that the other traditional path to political office other than a law career is being a high-ranking commissioned officer and/or "war hero"

this is true, accounting for the John McCains would require an expansion beyond the character limit

My sister's high school boyfriend had this whole life plan to become the first Asian President, by doing all this shit to overcome people's distrust of Asians' patriotism and sense of Asian men's effeminacy Step one was to join the Marines and get deployed to Iraq as an officer

The plan was to serve with distinction, then come home and enroll in law school, get a JD, practice just long enough to build a résumé, then immediately start working his way up through elected office

It was very off putting and I remember thinking how much it would serve him right to just get shot in his first six months in active duty

Well, he probably integrated that into his plans too, like as long as you survive nothing voters love more than a Purple Heart

Honestly you think about the agonizing pain McCain lived with his whole life that no amount of physical therapy could ever actually fix, turning him from an athletic macho bro to a sedentary middle aged man overnight, and it's just "Play stupid games win stupid prizes"
