...The whole thing that's really disturbing about 50SoG is it's really, really obvious Anastasia was originally Bella and was originally in high school, and the author just perfunctorily turned her into a college graduate without changing anything else about herhttps://twitter.com/JennyENicholson/status/1308196792408797184 …

I mean it describes her doing cartwheels out of excitement in public and shit Not that that's something a woman in her 20s *couldn't* do, but probably there'd be alcohol involved (whereas Anastasia is a good girl who never had a drop of booze while getting her BA in English)

And the stuff where, like, she doesn't own her own computer, and has never watched porn before, and doesn't even know what BDSM is, so Christian/Edward buys one for her and makes her look it all up as "homework" (The movie retcons all of this as best it can)

This just seems like nonsense for a character of any age really.

Yeah, OK, "nonsense" isn't the right word for that, but like, that's not what James was going for either. So it's a kind of bizarre gibberish of different tropes adding up to nothing.

I've seen a lot of people accuse James of being "into pedophilia" and while I don't think that's literally true I think this is inevitably where the whole trope of fetishizing "innocence" ends up taking you

Yeah, I think that's right. It's not 'pedophilia' but it's something not ENTIRELY different.
